A Japanese head spa is more than a scalp massage. Depending on the salon and treatment, the experience may include scalp care, shampooing, massage, hair treatment, and relaxation.
But what actually happens when you visit a Japanese head spa for the first time?
At Belle Cheveu, the experience begins before the treatment itself and continues through drying, styling, and after-treatment counseling. In this guide, we explain what you can expect from arrival to the end of your visit.
Before the Treatment: What Happens When You Arrive?
Your head spa experience starts with a short consultation.
If it is your first visit to Belle Cheveu, you will fill out a counseling sheet and then speak with a therapist about your scalp and hair. This helps the therapist understand your concerns and choose a suitable treatment.
At Belle Cheveu, we may also use a microscope to take a closer look at your scalp before the treatment. The purpose is to help the therapist understand the condition they can observe before starting the head spa.
You do not need to arrive especially early for your first visit. The important thing is simply to arrive at your reserved time.
During the Treatment: The Main Steps
The exact process of a Japanese head spa varies between salons and courses. At Belle Cheveu, our core head spa treatments combine scalp cleansing, shampooing, scalp massage, and hair treatment.
Scalp Cleansing
The treatment begins with care for the scalp.
Scalp cleansing is used to remove excess oil, styling product residue, and other buildup from the scalp. At Belle Cheveu, scalp cleansing is part of our core head spa treatments.
This step prepares the scalp for the rest of the treatment.
Shampooing
The scalp and hair are then shampooed.
At Belle Cheveu, we use shampoos that were specially developed for our head spa treatments. The products are selected with the guest’s scalp and hair condition in mind.
For someone experiencing a Japanese head spa for the first time, this part of the experience can feel different from a regular shampoo at a hair salon. The shampoo is one part of a larger treatment that also includes scalp care, massage, and hair care.
Scalp Massage
Scalp massage is a central part of the experience.
At Belle Cheveu, the massage is performed entirely by hand. The therapist adjusts the pressure while focusing on comfort and relaxation.
The massage is not the only part of a Japanese head spa, however. It is combined with scalp cleansing, shampooing, and hair treatment to create a more complete experience.
Hair Treatment
After the scalp has been cared for, the hair receives a treatment.
This is an important difference between a head spa focused only on massage and a treatment that also includes hair care. At Belle Cheveu, the hair treatment is part of our approach of combining scalp care, hair care, and relaxation.
If you would like to understand more about how these elements come together in a Japanese head spa, see our guide:

After the Treatment: Drying, Styling, and Counseling
The experience does not end as soon as the treatment finishes.
After the head spa, your therapist will do a basic drying of your hair. You can then use the available blow dryers and styling tools to finish your hair yourself.
This can be useful for travelers who are continuing their day in Tokyo after the treatment. You do not have to leave the salon with wet hair.
There is also an after-treatment counseling session. Finally, Belle Cheveu offers an after drink before you leave.
How Long Does a Japanese Head Spa Take?
The treatment time and the total time spent at the salon are not always the same.
At Belle Cheveu, counseling and hair drying are not included in the stated treatment time. The total time from arrival to departure therefore includes more than the treatment itself.
For example, some of our current courses have treatment times of 75 or 90 minutes, while the approximate total time at the salon is longer.
When planning your day in Tokyo, it is a good idea to allow enough time for the entire experience rather than looking only at the treatment time.
Is a Japanese Head Spa Suitable for First-Time Visitors?
Yes. You do not need previous experience with a Japanese head spa.
If you are visiting for the first time, the consultation gives you an opportunity to explain your concerns and ask questions before the treatment begins.
For regular treatments at Belle Cheveu, you also do not normally need to change your clothes. This means the experience can be relatively simple even if you are fitting a head spa into a busy day of sightseeing in Tokyo.
The most important thing is to choose a treatment that matches what you are looking for and to check what is included before making a reservation.
What Makes the Experience Different from a Simple Head Massage?
A simple head massage mainly focuses on massage.
A Japanese head spa can combine massage with scalp care, hair care, and relaxation. However, there is no single standardized procedure used by every salon in Japan, so the exact experience depends on the salon and course.
This is why it is worth checking what a salon actually includes rather than choosing based only on the name “Japanese head spa.”

What to Expect at Belle Cheveu
Belle Cheveu has specialized in head spa treatments in Tokyo since 2006.
Today, we operate four directly managed salons in Tokyo. Our therapists are licensed beauticians in Japan, and we generally limit each therapist to no more than three head spa guests per day to help maintain treatment quality.
Most of our guests are Japanese, but we also welcome visitors from overseas who want to experience the head spa we have developed in Japan.
Our approach is based on three elements: scalp care, hair care, and relaxation.
