A Japanese head spa can help your hair in a few limited ways: it leaves the scalp cleaner, it can make your hair feel softer and easier to manage for a week or two, and it gives you a relaxing break. It is a relaxation and beauty treatment, not a medical one. There is no good evidence that a single head spa makes hair grow thicker or stops hair loss.
A Japanese head spa (called a “head spa” in Japan) is a salon treatment focused on the scalp and hair. Depending on the course, it usually combines a scalp check, scalp cleansing, a scalp and neck massage, and a hair care step.
What can a Japanese head spa do for your hair?
Most of the effects are cosmetic and short term.
- A cleaner scalp. Scalp cleansing is a step that works a cleansing product directly into the scalp rather than just through the hair. It removes excess oil, sweat, and residue from styling products. Straight afterward, the scalp feels clean and the hair often feels lighter.
- Softer, more manageable hair. A hair treatment or conditioning step can temporarily improve how smooth and moisturized your hair feels. At most salons this effect lasts around two weeks, depending on your hair, the course, and how you care for it at home.
- Relaxation. Much of a head spa is a slow scalp and neck massage in a quiet room. This does not change your hair, but many people find it a real break.
None of this permanently changes your hair type, thickness, or rate of growth.
Does a Japanese head spa make your hair grow?
There is no reliable evidence that a single salon head spa makes hair grow. The research that exists is about repeated daily scalp massage done at home over months, not a one-off treatment, and it is limited.
- In a 2016 study published in the journal Eplasty, nine men did four minutes of standardized scalp massage a day for 24 weeks. The massaged areas showed a small increase in the thickness of individual hairs, from about 0.085 to 0.092 mm, but no change in the number of hairs or how fast they grew.
- In a 2019 survey published in the journal Dermatology and Therapy, 327 people with hereditary hair thinning did standardized scalp massages for an average of about seven months. Around 69% felt their hair loss had stabilized or improved. The authors noted that the study had no control group and relied on people’s own impressions, so it cannot show that the massage caused the change.
In short, daily scalp massage kept up for a long time might have a small effect, but the evidence is still preliminary. A head spa once or twice during a trip is a treatment for your scalp’s cleanliness and your own relaxation, not a hair-growth program.
Can a head spa stop hair loss?
No. Hair loss and thinning have many causes, including heredity, aging, hormonal changes, thyroid problems, nutritional gaps, scalp conditions, tight hairstyles, and shedding that follows childbirth, illness, or major stress. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, shedding brought on by stress or illness usually recovers on its own within about six to nine months after the trigger passes, and its guidance on hair loss does not list head spas, scalp massage, or scalp cleansing as treatments.
A head spa will not diagnose or treat any of these. If you notice a widening part, patchy loss, a lot of hair coming out at once, or a scalp that stays itchy, painful, or flaky, see a dermatologist. A relaxing scalp treatment is not a substitute for that.
Is a head spa still good for your scalp?
Yes, in an everyday-care sense. Clearing built-up oil and product from the scalp, getting a close look at its condition (some salons use a microscope camera), and hearing simple home-care advice can all be useful. This is upkeep and comfort, not treatment for a medical condition, and the main thing you notice is how your scalp and hair feel afterward.

| Permanently change hair thickness or texture | No |
| Make hair grow or regrow | Not supported by good evidence |
